Australian Programs

The Jane Goodall Institute Australia (JGIA) was founded in 2007 and is an Australian non-profit and registered environmental organisation.

Our Philosophy is centered on the interconnectedness of Animals, People and the Environment (APE) and our Purpose is to “inspire actions that connect people with animals and our shared environment”.

Founded in 1991 by Dr. Jane Goodall, Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots is a youth service program for Australian young people of all ages. Our mission is to foster respect and compassion for all living things, to promote understanding of all cultures and beliefs, and to inspire each individual to take action to make the world a better place for people, other animals, and the environment.

Roots & Shoots is a global network of young people taking action to improve our world. It is a youth-led action program that is currently making a difference in over 50 countries. It builds on Dr. Jane’s legacy and vision of placing the power and responsibility for creating solutions to big challenges in the hands of the young people. All around the world today, youth are exploring problems in their communities around animals, people and the environment, brainstorming solutions and creating projects that help to solve the problems. Roots & Shoots is a program that is different for each and every member around the world. For instance, a project that works for inner city kids in Australia is going to differ enormously from a project that works in remote towns in Australia.

The Jane Goodall Institute Australia’s focusses on the following Roots & Shoots programs:

The Resource Box Program

The Jane Goodall Roots & Shoots Resource Box is a free box of resources for primary schools and home schools students (of primary school age) across Australia. It aims to educate students about people, wildlife, the natural environment and challenges facing the planet.

The project has been running for four years, with 4000 boxes of books distributed each year free of charge – to educate and inspire the next generation of custodians of planet earth.

Many of the books come with free lesson plans. Most of the books are available to be viewed for free as an eBook. All printed books will be available from our store (currently being updated). Email info@janegoodall.org.au if you would like to purchase a copy in the interim.

Our ReWild Your School Program

ReWild Your School is our flagship environmental education program designed for Stage 3 school students. The program aims to promote local biodiversity, address the impacts of climate change, and enhance mental well-being through purposeful and sustainable habitat creation.

Visit the ReWild Your School pages to learn more about this transformative journey of environmental education and conservation. Together, we can make a significant impact on the decline of biodiversity and create a brighter, greener future for generations to come.

Our Mini Grants Program

Inspired by the incredible life and conservation legacy of Dr. Jane Goodall, the Mini Grants program is a seed-funding initiative that promotes respect and compassion for all living things throughout Australia.

Every year, JGIA welcome applications from passionate individuals and groups from all corners of the country to bring their big ideas to life. With a Mini Grant from JGIA, winners receive seed-funding to implement their projects that benefit animals, people, and the environment. In addition, each winner is paired with a dedicated Mini Grants Mentor, who offers expert advice and guidance to bring the project to fruition.

Join us in making a positive impact in Australia by applying for a Mini Grant and taking the first step towards creating a more compassionate and sustainable world for all.

Our JGIA Leadership Council (Formely National Youth Leadership Council)

The JGIA Leadership Council (Formely National Youth Leadership Council, NYLC) is a transformative 9-month program that empowers emerging leaders across Australia to connect, learn, and inspire positive change in their communities. Through peer learning, social events, global engagement, industry mentoring, and local volunteering, JGIA Leadership Council members develop leadership skills and make a difference. Former members praise the program for its impact on their personal growth and environmental advocacy. Applications for the next cohort open in early July, welcoming students and youth leaders aged 16-24, with or without previous experience, to apply and join the Roots & Shoots Australia community.
