What on Earth?

What is your favourite animal? Perhaps your pet cat or your neighbour’s  dog? Or a lion, tiger or giraffe you saw at a zoo?

Have you ever thought how many types of animals there are… or how  many of those animals you know?

No one really knows precisely how many species of animals exist on Planet  Earth because scientists continue to find ever more undescribed animal  species in remote parts of the world, especially small creatures such  as insects.

At least 1,500,000 species of animals have been discovered and are  recognised today, although some zoologists (the term for scientists  that study animals) believe millions more await formal classification.

This book is all about animal species you might never have heard of, so  you may end up choosing a new favourite!
