Dr. Jane Goodall DBE Australian Memorial

Under the soft glow of Taronga Zoo and the quiet shimmer of Sydney Harbour, we gathered to honour a woman who changed us all. The Australian Memorial for Dr Jane Goodall DBE was more than an event. It felt like a collective embrace. A moment where love, gratitude and gentle remembrance settled over everyone in the room.

As guests arrived and took their seats, there was a shared stillness, the kind that happens when people come together out of deep respect and love. Georgie Gardner opened the evening with warmth, followed by a beautiful Acknowledgement of Country, smoking ceremony, cultural reflections and a symbolic future-focused handover by Susan Moylan-Coombs that grounded us in connection and healing.

Cameron Kerr welcomed everyone into the heart of the night, leading into a tender keynote from Maria Sykes. She shared Jane’s story with such care that many of us felt tears rising. A moving tribute video followed, filled with memories that reminded us just how extraordinary Jane’s life truly was.

Our Roots & Shoots youth then stepped forward, offering heartfelt reflections that showed exactly why Jane invested so much hope in young people. We also heard touching video messages from Jane’s global friends, closing with a special message from Robert Irwin.

Maria returned with a gentle call to action, inviting us to continue the work Jane began. A short film echoed that message, followed by The Earth Breathes, a quiet moment of stillness where the whole room paused to breathe together.

Then came an unforgettable moment. Marcia Hines stepped onto the stage to sing Jane’s farewell song. Her voice held the whole room, soft and soulful, wrapping everyone in warmth.

To close, Georgie guided us into a heartfelt chimp hoot farewell with the JGIA team and Taronga’s primate keepers. It was emotional, honest and beautifully true to Jane.

During the evening, we also had the privilege of gifting 91 native saplings to guests who contributed to the Jane Goodall Memorial Fund. These saplings marked Jane’s 91 extraordinary years, each one a living reminder of the future Jane dedicated her life to protecting. Generously provided by the Royal Botanic Gardens, they were offered with love and gratitude.

In memory of her lifelong dedication to animals, people and our planet, the Jane Goodall Memorial Fund will help ensure Jane’s legacy continues to inspire hope and action for generations to come.

The night was filled with love, reflection and deep gratitude. A night where we honoured a woman who showed us what kindness looks like in action, and reminded us that every individual makes a difference. Every day.

Support Dr. Jane’s Legacy

In honour of ensuring Jane’s vision lives on, we have set up the Jane Goodall Memorial Fund. Dedicated to her legacy, this fund will ensure her work continues to inspire the next generation of conservation leaders. This fund is the most fitting way we can imagine Jane would want to have been remembered in this moment as the world grieves – for us all to remain steadfast in carrying on her life’s work, honouring her memory and ensuring her vision lives on well beyond her lifetime.

By contributing to the Jane Goodall Memorial Fund you will help carry on her life’s work, and directly support the programmes Jane cared about most:

  • Expanding Roots & Shoots across Australian schools

  • Empowering young people to become environmental stewards

  • Protecting the wildlife and habitats she fought so hard to safeguard.
